Why I Trek

Supporting women’s shelters

As a Realtor, my purpose is to find people a home. Sadly, on any given night, close to 6,000 women and children are fleeing their homes to find refuge in an emergency shelter because home is not a safe place for them. And hundreds are turned away because there is no space for them.

Locally, our Three Oaks Foundation has been providing safe shelter for women and children since 1983. Thanks to support like yours, each year they are able to house nearly twice as many fleeing domestic violence as their funding allows for.

Women’s shelters across Canada need our support now more than ever to fund their life-saving and life-changing work. As we emerge from the COVID pandemic, shelters across the country are reporting rising rates of domestic violence and more women than ever who are reaching out for help. While most of our lives have returned to normal, there are women and children in all corners of the country who are now fleeing the danger within their homes and working to rebuild their future after experiencing domestic violence.

About this Challenge

In October 2025, I headed to the other side of the globe to participate in the Cambodia Challenge for Shelter.

For 5 days, I trekked alongside like-minded colleagues from coast to coast, all in support of the Royal LePage Shelter Foundation. While my trek toward the picturesque temples of Angkor Wat was immensely rewarding, it was not easy. The days were long, hot, and humid, and the jet lag was intense. I went without the comforts of home, sleeping in a small tent, using rustic bathroom facilities, and unplugging completely from cell service and technology. To be eligible to take part, I paid my own trek and travel expenses and raised at least $6,000 for the Royal LePage Shelter Foundation. Of the funds I raised, 80% was directed to my local women’s shelter, and 20% funded national domestic violence prevention programs.

I knew the adventure ahead would test me both physically and emotionally, but I raised my hand because I believed that a house was only a home when the people who lived there felt safe. As I faced this challenge, I drew strength knowing that every dollar I raised, and every kilometre I walked, helped make it easier for women and children to find the safety, hope, and healing they deserved.
